Is it normal or a cat to kill a squirrel?

I never even heard of that. So, My mom said she was about to walk outside to her car and she saw the cat chasing the squirrel and then it killed it. Its a stray cat but the squirrel was big. My mom chased the cat out of our yard but the dead squirrel is still laying there. I thought that was weird when she told me that.
